Together We Can Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes are growing health concerns across the nation. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease in which blood glucose (sugar) levels are above normal. Prediabetes is when your blood sugar is higher than normal but not as high as when you have type 2 diabetes.

About 1 in 11 American adults have type 2 diabetes, and one third of American adults have prediabetes. In the County of Santa Clara, 8 percent of adults have been told that they have diabetes and 17 percent of adults have been told they have prediabetes.

Uncontrolled type 2 diabetes can cause serious health issues such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, and kidney failure. It can also lead to the loss of toes, feet, or legs.

Type 2 diabetes is preventable

Preventing type 2 diabetes is “in our hands” through healthy choices like eating fruits and vegetables, walking in the park, or doing yoga.
