County of Santa Clara, City of San Jose, and Continuum of Care Partners Address COVID-19 in the Homeless Community

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 28, 2020

The County of Santa Clara, City of San Jose, and Santa Clara County Continuum of Care Partners are working together to address the needs of homeless individuals affected by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

As of March 26, the County and City has secured the use of 172 hotel/motel rooms at sites in San Jose, Santa Clara, and Gilroy, and is continuing to secure additional temporary housing sites (including hotels and motels) for isolation and quarantine.

Among our efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the homeless community:

  • The County is preparing temporary shelter capacity at the County Fairgrounds with the City preparing Parkside Hall and South Hall to be used as temporary shelters;
  • All existing shelters are now operating 24/7 and practicing proper social distancing;
  • Seasonal shelters are remaining open through April 15;
  • For a complete list of initiatives currently underway to support the homeless community visit https://covid19.sccgov.org/homeless-response

The County of Santa Clara values the interagency partnerships that have been forged to address the particular vulnerabilities of the homeless community. It is only through a collective response that we will be able to limit the impact of COVID-19 for all residents of the county.
