WHAT:
As part of a week of red ribbon events promoting AIDS awareness, Health Officer Dr. Sara Cody and STD Controller Dr. Sarah Lewis, both from County of Santa Clara Public Health Department, will be available for interviews after speaking at the World AIDS Day Getting to Zero Celebration Friday, November 30. Confirmed speakers include County Supervisor Ken Yeager, County Supervisor Dave Cortese, and Robert Smart of the Santa Clara County HIV Commission.
Honored each December 1 since 1988, World AIDS Day unites people worldwide in the fight against HIV and commemorates those who have died from AIDS-related illness. The HIV epidemic has stabilized in the County of Santa Clara since the mid-2000s, with 3,361 people known to be diagnosed and living with HIV/AIDS as of 2017. African American and Latino residents are disproportionately impacted by the disease, with rates among African Americans more than four times higher than rates among non-Hispanic whites.
