October 15 Is Global Handwashing Day

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF. – Monday, October 15 is Global Handwashing Day and County of Santa Clara officials want to reinforce the importance of handwashing for the public and the food service industry. Global Handwashing Day serves as a reminder from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to maintain proper hygiene every day. Handwashing is an important part of keeping food safe, preventing diseases and promoting good health. Repeated washing throughout the day is essential to minimize the potential for contamination as hands can transfer disease-causing bacteria and viruses. These organisms can spread from touching any surface, including food preparation and serving areas, restroom faucets and toilets, and food itself. Hepatitis A, Norovirus, Salmonella, and Shigella infections are among the many illnesses that handwashing can help prevent.
