Public Health Department statement on first flu death

The first death due to flu this season has been reported to the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department. The individual was an adult under the age of 65, with underlying health conditions, and unvaccinated against the flu. For reasons of medical privacy, no additional details about the person will be released at this time. Only deaths due to flu among people under age 65 are reportable to the County Public Health Department.

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Symptoms of the flu are similar to those of the common cold and can include fever, cough, and fatigue, but the flu is often more severe and can begin more abruptly.

Getting the flu shot every year is the best way to avoid getting influenza and prevent severe flu symptoms. Masking indoors also helps prevent flu and other respiratory viruses from spreading. People over age 65, young children, pregnant people, and people who have health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease are especially vulnerable.
